BRISTOL — Inner-city air quality across central Bristol has improved markedly over the past twenty-four months, with average roadside nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations declining by 18.4% across the central urban core, according to the official two-year Clean Air Zone (CAZ) Technical Review published today.
The comprehensive 84-page report, compiled jointly by Bristol City Council’s Air Quality Management team and independent atmospheric scientists at the University of the West of England (UWE), provides the most thorough empirical assessment to date of the environmental and public health impacts of the charging zone introduced in late 2022.
Statutory Air Quality Thresholds Achieved
The data reveals that several of Bristol’s most notoriously polluted thoroughfares have registered compliance with statutory UK legal limits (40 µg/m³) for the first time in over two decades.
Key monitoring findings include:
- Rupert Street / St James Barton: Recorded a 22.6% reduction in annual mean NO2 levels, falling from 47.8 µg/m³ in 2022 to 37.0 µg/m³ in 2026.
- Anchor Road & Canons Way (Harbourside): Recorded an average 19.1% drop in peak particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10).
- Bedminster Bridges & York Road: Registered a 16.8% decline in roadside nitrogen dioxide emissions.
Fleet Modernisation and Modal Shift
The study highlights a dramatic acceleration in vehicular compliance rates entering the central zone. Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera telemetry indicates that 94.8% of all private passenger vehicles and 91.2% of light commercial vans driving within the zone boundary are now fully compliant with Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol emission standards, up from 71.3% prior to implementation.
Furthermore, council financial records confirm that over £14.5 million generated from non-compliant vehicle charges has been legally ring-fenced and reinvested into local public transport subsidies, school active-travel streets, and electric vehicle loan schemes for small business tradespeople.
