Sir Alex Ferguson Sounded Out Steven Gerrard for Man Utd

Sir Alex Ferguson, then manager of Manchester United, made an attempt to sign Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard, utilising Gary Neville as an unlikely messenger during England national team duty. The Liverpool captain, however, swiftly rejected any possibility of a move to Old Trafford.

Ferguson’s Overture via Gary Neville

The revelation, shared by Gerrard himself during an appearance on Open Goal, details how Manchester United’s interest extended to a direct approach. Around 2004, while Gerrard and Neville were away with the England squad, Neville initiated a conversation at Ferguson’s behest. According to Yahoo Sports, Neville approached Gerrard and asked if there was “any small possible chance” he would consider playing for Manchester United.

Gerrard’s response was immediate and firm: “Gary, just leave.” Neville, who had previously recounted his version on Stick to Football, revealed Ferguson had personally asked him to sound out Gerrard and even offered to collect the midfielder himself, as reported by the Manchester Evening News. Gerrard reiterated that such a move was “impossible” and thanked Neville for the flattery but insisted it “cannot happen.”

Unwavering Loyalty to Liverpool

The prospect of Gerrard in a Manchester United shirt was, for many, an almost unthinkable scenario. Gerrard, an academy graduate, local lad, and long-serving captain, represented the heart of Liverpool, a club fiercely competitive with United. He explained to Neville that his family would never be able to remain in Liverpool if he made such a switch, highlighting the intense rivalry between the clubs. Gerrard clarified that while some players like Paul Ince and Michael Owen have represented both clubs, a direct transfer for an established player from Liverpool to Manchester United was a “big no-no” and virtually unheard of in the men’s game for around 40 years.

Sir Alex Ferguson himself had publicly expressed admiration for Gerrard earlier in his career, stating he would show interest if there was any chance, but acknowledged it was unrealistic due to the unique situation compared to other rival transfers, such as those between Leeds and Manchester United. While Chelsea had come much closer to securing Gerrard’s services, the approach from Old Trafford was quickly shut down.

Gerrard’s Impact at Anfield

Steven Gerrard’s career at Liverpool spanned from his first-team debut in November 1998 until his departure for LA Galaxy in 2015. During this time, he made 710 appearances, scoring 186 goals, and captained the club for 12 years. His trophy cabinet includes the Champions League, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups, and the UEFA Super Cup. He was also named PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 2006. Memorable moments include his thunderous strike against Olympiacos, his role in the “Miracle of Istanbul” Champions League final comeback, and his extraordinary performance in the 2006 FA Cup final, widely known as “The Gerrard Final.”

His unwavering commitment to Liverpool, despite the interest from rival clubs like Manchester United, solidified his status as a club legend.
