Recycling Facilities Face Closure & Suspicious Death Probe

GardaĆ are treating the discovery of a man’s body at a waste recycling facility in west Dublin as suspicious. The body was found early on Saturday morning at the Greyhound Recycling Centre in Clondalkin, prompting a major investigation.

In a separate development, a recycling centre in Norfolk is set to close permanently next week, with residents directed to an alternative modern facility.

Dublin Investigation Underway

The man’s body was discovered at the Greyhound Recycling Centre before 1am on Saturday, October 24, according to RTE.ie. GardaĆ from the technical bureau have been working at the scene, and the body has been removed for a post-mortem examination as efforts continue to establish the man’s identity.

Sources cited by The Irish Times indicate that GardaĆ believe the man may have been murdered, with a senior investigating officer appointed to lead the inquiry. An incident room has been established at Ronanstown Garda Station, and all circumstances surrounding the man’s death are being investigated.

Greyhound Recycling released a statement expressing profound sadness at the discovery and affirmed their full cooperation with Ronanstown Garda Station. They encouraged anyone with information to come forward. Sinn FĆ©in councillor William Carey conveyed his sympathies, stating, ā€œMy thoughts would go out for any family of any person who is found in those circumstances.ā€

Anyone with information is urged to contact Ronanstown Garda Station on 01-6667700, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

Norfolk Recycling Centre to Close

Meanwhile, in Norfolk, the Morningthorpe Recycling Centre near Long Stratton will permanently close its doors from November 1, with October 31 being its last day of operation. The closure follows the end of a 25-year lease, which the landowner confirmed could not be extended beyond February 2027, as reported by EDP24. The site is shutting a few months early to allow the land to be returned in the required condition.

Local residents previously using Morningthorpe are advised to use the Norwich South Recycling Centre and Reuse Shop, located in Ipswich Road, off the A140/A47 roundabout. This facility is described as Norfolk’s most modern recycling centre and accepts a broader range of materials, including fridges, freezers, plasterboard, upholstered seating, tyres, and trade waste. The site has sufficient capacity for additional visitors and also features a reuse shop where unwanted items can be donated or preloved goods purchased. A booking is necessary for bringing waste to the centre, but not for visiting, donating to, or buying from the reuse shop.
