Thekla Completes Vital Dockside Dry-Dock Overhaul Securing Long-Term Future of Iconic Floating Venue

MUD DOCK — The worldwide music community breathed a collective sigh of celebration this week as Bristol’s most iconic live music venue—the historic converted German cargo vessel MV Thekla—successfully returned to its permanent mooring at East Mud Dock following a £480,000 structural overhaul in the adjacent Albion Dry Dock.

Moored in the Floating Harbour since 1984, the 1958-built steel coaster has hosted legendary early performances by Massive Attack, Portishead, Radiohead, Florence + The Machine, and Stormzy. The vessel underwent intensive marine engineering inspections to preserve its structural hull against freshwater corrosion and guarantee safe venue operations for the next quarter-century.

Advanced Marine Engineering and Acoustic Enhancements

During its five-week residency inside the historic Grade II listed dry dock, specialized marine shipwrights executed precision repairs including:

  • Ultrasonic Steel Resurfacing: Over 120 square metres of the lower hull plating were reinforced with high-tensile marine-grade steel doubling plates, followed by the application of multi-coat epoxy corrosion barriers.
  • Acoustic Hull Dampening: Installation of an advanced internal vibration-dampening acoustic subfloor within the main cargo-hold performance room, reducing low-frequency sound transference into the surrounding harbour water by 14 decibels.
  • Upgraded Stage Lighting & Air Filtration: Comprehensive refit of the stage ventilation and HVAC heat-recovery system alongside zero-emission LED intelligent concert lighting.

Safeguarding Grassroots Cultural Landmarks

The restoration project was financed through a combination of venue operators DHP Family, contributions from the national Music Venue Trust (MVT) Pipeline Investment Fund, and thousands of donations from loyal Bristol gig-goers.

Thekla General Manager Alex Black expressed heartfelt gratitude: “Thekla is far more than a boat—it is an indispensable cultural sanctuary that has launched the careers of iconic musicians and sound innovators for over forty years. Seeing her back on the water, structurally pristine and sound-engineered to perfection, is the proudest moment of our team’s career.”

The venue will mark its official reopening on Friday, 4 September with an exclusive celebratory weekend showcase featuring unannounced sets from leading Bristol artists.
