EAST BRISTOL — Commuters traveling between Bristol’s eastern and northern suburbs will soon benefit from a high-frequency orbital bus network engineered to bypass central traffic congestion entirely, under a £7.8 million public transit initiative ratified by the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) Transport Board.
The new express orbital corridor, designated the Bristol Orbital Express (Route O1), will provide direct, high-frequency connections linking St Anne’s, Easton, Fishponds, Frenchay (UWE Campus), and Southmead Hospital on a guaranteed 10-minute peak timetable.
Eliminating Central Congestion Bottlenecks
Historically, orbital journeys across Bristol required passengers to take two separate bus routes into the congested city centre (Broadmead/Colston Avenue) and interchange, frequently resulting in commute times exceeding 75 minutes for journeys under six miles. The new Route O1 cuts transit times between Fishponds and Southmead Hospital to just 22 minutes.
The service will be operated by First Bus West of England utilizing a dedicated fleet of 24 brand-new British-manufactured Wrightbus battery-electric zero-emission double-deckers equipped with free passenger Wi-Fi, wireless phone charging docks, and digital next-stop audiovisual announcements.
Key Route Enhancements and Bus Priority Corridors
To ensure strict timetable reliability, WECA and Bristol City Council are delivering a concurrent £2.4m package of dedicated bus priority measures along the route, including:
- Traffic Signal Pre-emption: Automated transponder sensors at 18 major junctions along Muller Road, Stapleton Road, and Lodge Causeway that automatically extend green lights for approaching O1 buses.
- Upgraded Super-Shelters: Installation of 34 high-spec passenger shelters featuring real-time electronic countdown displays, solar lighting, and CCTV security monitoring.
- Affordable Flat-Fare Structure: Full integration into the regional £2.00 adult single fare cap and unlimited £4.50 daily multi-operator transit pass.
Critical Access for Healthcare Workers and Students
Southmead Hospital Trust Chief Executive welcomed the route: “Over 9,000 healthcare staff, outpatients, and visitors travel to Southmead Hospital daily. A reliable, direct, zero-emission orbital link from East Bristol removes thousands of private cars from our hospital car parks and provides our shift workers with a dependable public transport lifeline.”
Operational driver training and fleet testing will commence in late September, with full commercial passenger operations launching across the network on Sunday, 25 October 2026.
