Sam Mitchell stands as one of the most successful figures in the history of the Hawthorn Football Club, both as a decorated player and now as the architect of their promising future as head coach. A four-time Premiership player and Brownlow Medalist for the Hawks, Mitchell’s leadership and tactical acumen have been evident throughout his career.
After a decorated playing career that concluded with a short stint at the West Coast Eagles, Mitchell swiftly transitioned into coaching. He served as an assistant coach at both West Coast (where he was part of a premiership-winning staff) and then returned to Hawthorn in a development role, culminating in him coaching the club’s VFL affiliate, the Box Hill Hawks.
In 2021, Mitchell was famously appointed to succeed the legendary Alastair Clarkson under a phased succession plan. However, that plan was expedited, and Mitchell took over as the senior coach of the Hawthorn Football Club at the end of the 2021 season.
Mitchell inherited a team in need of significant rebuilding and cultural change. His early seasons were challenging: the Hawks finished 13th in 2022 and 16th in 2023. These results, however, masked a deliberate strategy of youth development and calculated list changes.
The success of this rebuild became dramatically apparent in the 2024 AFL season. Under Mitchell’s guidance, Hawthorn achieved a surprise emergence, finishing 7th on the ladder and making the finals for the first time since he took the helm. This unexpected success was a testament to his clear vision and the development of the young playing group.
The 2025 season has seen the Hawks consolidate that success. They have improved their record, winning 15 games and placing them just one win off a top-four position, demonstrating back-to-back finals appearances. Analysts now credit Mitchell with putting Hawthorn back on a clear premiership trajectory after just two full seasons of intense rebuilding.
Mitchell’s coaching style is often described as meticulous, demanding, and highly focused on the intangible elements of team culture and mental toughness. He is not afraid to make bold decisions regarding player selection or strategy, a trait that has earned him respect within the league.
His rapid success in returning the Hawks to contention has placed him among the most highly-rated young coaches in the AFL. The stability and clear direction he has brought to the club, coupled with the impressive winning records in 2024 and 2025, solidify his status as a pivotal figure aiming to replicate his playing glory in the coach’s box.
