Deacon Phillippe, the 22-year-old son of acclaimed actors Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe, has made his feature film acting debut in the sci-fi thriller Brother Save Us. The New York University graduate, who was supported by his mother and sister Ava at the film’s premiere in Nashville, spoke about his commitment to hard work despite his privileged upbringing.
Phillippe has acknowledged his fortunate start in the industry, stating, "I acknowledge that I’m extremely lucky, but you know, at the same time, I hold myself to a standard." He added in an interview with People.com, "I’m not really looking to prove anything to anyone but myself to try to be the best version I can be, the best person I can be and work as hard as I can."
Deacon Phillippe’s Path in Entertainment
Before his feature film debut, Phillippe appeared in two episodes of Never Have I Ever in 2022 and played a younger version of his father’s character in flashback scenes for the Prime Video series Motorheads. He recently graduated from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, having studied recorded music at the Clive Davis Institute. This education proved useful for Brother Save Us, as he co-wrote and recorded the end credits song for the film with two college friends.
Phillippe highlighted the importance of his education, telling Variety, "I’m beyond grateful for my education, and I think It’s provided so many things." He also commented on external perceptions, saying, "A lot of people are going to assume things … All I can do is do my thing, and show that I want to work extremely, extremely hard." This dedication is a common theme in Hollywood, where talent and perseverance are key to success.
About Brother Save Us
Brother Save Us is a sci-fi thriller directed and written by Jesse Behrenwald. It tells the story of two brothers living in a dystopian Midwest. Deacon Phillippe’s character, Cole, works to protect his younger brother, Nat (Thomas Murphy Molony), from the harsh realities of their world. The plot intensifies after their father acquires an AI farm bot from the controversial tech company Agentico, which begins to alter everything.
Phillippe was drawn to the script due to its portrayal of sibling affection, which resonated with his own relationship with his 13-year-old half-brother, Tennessee Toth (Reese Witherspoon’s son with ex-husband Jim Toth). "I just remember feeling surprised that someone could write exactly how I feel about my little brother. That depth of love in a script is just something you rarely get to see," he shared. Beyond acting, Deacon Phillippe also served as one of the film’s producers. The movie premiered at the Nashville Film Festival on Saturday, 26 September.
Future Endeavours and Family Influence
Next for Phillippe is a role in Better Than the Movies, the Netflix adaptation of Lynn Painter’s novel, which he described as a romantic comedy that pays homage to 90s rom-coms. He praised the experience of working with director Julia Hart and co-writer Jordan Horowitz as "the most incredible, fun, smooth and beautiful process."
When asked about his mother’s films, Phillippe cited Sweet Home Alabama as his favourite romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon, though he admits it’s "very weird to watch your parents act." He values their guidance, stating, "I’m always leaning on them for advice, which is another thing I’m blessed to have." His father, Ryan Phillippe, previously expressed pride in Deacon’s acting debut in Never Have I Ever and praised his music. This past summer, Deacon also accompanied his mother to the premiere of Elle in New York City, where he recreated his father’s look from the 2001 Legally Blonde premiere.
