Lyon midfielder Pavel Sulc has confirmed he turned down a club-record £35 million transfer bid from Wrexham, stating he “didn’t feel like going to a small town in Wales” or playing in the Championship. The 25-year-old Czechia international, who was named Czech Footballer of the Year last year, remained with the Ligue 1 side despite significant interest from several clubs.
Wrexham’s Record Bid Declined
Wrexham reportedly made a substantial offer of £35 million to secure Sulc’s services, which would have been a new club record for the Welsh side. It would also have been the most expensive transfer in Championship history, surpassing the £22 million paid by West Ham for Celtic’s Arne Engels last month. However, Sulc ultimately rejected the move, as reported by Wales Online.
Speaking to Czech outlet Seznam Zpravy, Sulc clarified his position. He said, "Wrexham offered the most. They talked about a billion koruna (£35 million). Honestly? Wrexham is a cult club with a Hollywood fairytale story, but I didn’t feel like going to the Championship or a small town in Wales."
Interest from Premier League and European Giants
During the summer transfer window, Sulc attracted attention from various clubs across Europe. Premier League sides including Leeds United, Everton, and Aston Villa reportedly made enquiries. European giants Juventus also contacted Lyon regarding a possible deal, as detailed by talkSPORT.
While Sulc admitted he was "a bit dreamy" when Juventus called, describing it as a "great club, fantastic history," he noted that their offer was not high enough for Lyon to accept. Sulc’s contract with Lyon currently runs through to June 2029, and he has expressed his commitment to the club.
What it Means for Bristol and South West Readers
